The power of 'who' goes to parliament resides with the party elites

Marc Alexander today said-

"One of the reasons we have idiots in parliament is because the power of 'who' goes to parliament resides with the party elites who, quite simply, don't want competition from intelligent, capable individuals who can think for themselves and refuse to be walking pamphlets i.e. having integrity to stand up and represent the voters who pay them rather than the party bosses who don't.

As a consequence we get a swarm of expensive and redundant smarmy self-interested nincompoops who are there solely to make up the numbers when voting on new Bills.

MMP has simply made things worse by gifting to these elites the ability to use the list system to ensure compliance and obedience to them.

People with strong voices are shut out for fear of rocking the boat and up-setting the tax-payer funded rort they call a job.

What we need less of is party politics and more individuals who, despite differences of approach and opinion, actually think that the interest of NZers should come first and work together more constructively."
